About
Raj Fishmeal and Oil Company
Foundation: The Vision of 1967
Raj Fishmeal and Oil Company was established as Coronet Fishmeal and Oil Company by Late Sri Malpe Madhwaraj, son of Sri Muthappa Sahukar, who pioneered the establishment of ice plants in Karnataka, supporting the fishing industry.
Shri Malpe Madhwaraj was a visionary entrepreneur and a resoundingly popular leader of the fishermen community of Karnataka. He served as the Member of Legislative Assembly of Udupi Constituency from 1962-1967. He played a pivotal role in transforming the port of Malpe into a dedicated fishing port (from commercial). He introduced mechanised fishing in the region and ensured the smooth transition of fishermen from traditional boats to mechanised boats. He took significant steps to rehabilitate landowners displaced by the redevelopment of Malpe port, relocating them to alternative sites and ensuring their resettlement. His extensive efforts focused on the welfare and advancement of the fishermen community led him to be fondly called “Mathsya Raja”.
He recognised the need for a facility processing fish which would directly benefit the fishermen community. He subsequently imported machinery from Scandinavian nations to establish India’s first mechanised fishmeal manufacturing plant. This plant was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri S. Nijalingappa, marking the beginning of an enterprise rooted in community engagement, and coastal economic development. The strategic location close to Malpe port has remained central to the company's operational identity for over half a century.
